The tile line takes the worst of the conditions: constant wet-and-dry at the surface, strong afternoon sun, and water chemistry that can be harsh on grout and mortar. Hot, dry summers mean high evaporation, which leaves minerals behind as white calcium scale. Movement between the deck and the pool can crack the coping and the tile below it.
